Chrome OS 79 disables the virtual desktop gestures even if you enable the flag. The gesture a implemented in Chrome OS 78 was a three finger swipe that was previously used to switch between tabs in Chrome. Reports are that Google will change the gesture to be a four finger swipe to move between virtual desktops.
Chrome OS Version 79.0.3945.123 was pushed to my Pixelbook the evening of 1/17/2020 and it doesn't appear to have anything more than bug fixes.
